Advanced Coursework

Each department in the school offers enriched coursework at every grade level. Please review the APS Program of Studies for detailed descriptions of these courses. In some instances, prerequisites are suggested to help students meet the level of rigor expected in these courses. A student does not need to be identified for gifted services to take any course offered at Wakefield High School.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses and the AP Capstone are offered for students who wish to take college level coursework during high school. Students are expected to do college level work within the class and will take the national Advanced Placement examination at the end of the course. The scores from these exams are sent to colleges and students may be able to skip freshman level courses when they enter college based on their scores (contact individual colleges and universities for the scores they accept for credit). All fees for these examinations will be paid by Arlington Public Schools.

Dual Enrollment (DE) courses are offered at Wakefield in partnership with Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA).

NOVA Online has sample syllabi on their website that showcase expectations for their courses. The course content summaries will give you a good description of the course objectives to help you determine what will work for you as well.  The orientation links for NOVA Online can also give you some information to help you determine your course load and to review expectations for the asynchronous course work. The time study table is in the orientation page, under “what do I need to know about online learning?” and then “how is online learning different from on-campus courses?”  We would also like to invite students and families to an additional session about Early Online College on Wednesday, December 13 at 6pm.  Selecting Courses for Early Online College Not sure what course(s) to request for Early Online College this spring? Whether you are a new or continuing NOVA student, you are invited to attend a webinar which will provide information about the importance of goal setting, understanding programs of study at NOVA, and selecting and requesting courses. We will also cover reminders to make sure your Early Online College request is complete or help you make edits to your course selection for spring.
