  • The National Portrait Gallery invites you to join its Teen Museum Council.
    • Teen Museum Council is an intensive program for D.C.-area teens (grades 9–12) who are interested in developing leadership skills, learning about themselves through portraiture and art and making the Portrait Gallery an engaging place for teenagers. Teen Museum Council, also known as TMC, is a program for teens by teens to foster more interest in museums and create a community for local teens. TMC members have the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities. These include creating teen-centered events and participating in workshops and training sessions with museum professionals. In the process, they will gain experience at the museum while developing creative and critical thinking skills. Teen Museum Council meets once a week during the school year and requires a year-long commitment.

  • Harvard Life Sciences Summer Research Opportunity — Free program/$15 application fee
    • In collaboration with the Harvard Undergraduate OpenBio Laboratory, we are thrilled to announce our inaugural Student Research Institute (SRI), a virtual research program where students are paired with principal investigators and researchers who are leading professionals in their respective fields, and we have identified your school amongst those that may have a large number of interested students! The SRI, which Harvard will be hosting, is a free program for students to virtually research with Harvard and other Ivy League faculty, publish their work in a Harvard research journal, and potentially earn an all expenses paid trip to Harvard for workshops with prestigious faculty. Our goal is to make the life sciences accessible to all who are interested, and this will be the first time that Harvard is opening up its resources to directly serve high school students for free!       • Rising High School Junior (Current Sophomore)
      • Successful Completion of Algebra 1
      • Minimum 2.3 GPA

      • Demonstrated leadership abilities
      • Demonstrated entrepreneurial mindset

  • STEM for Her Opportunities
  •  Embolden, a DC-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides tuition-free career and leadership development programs for high school students has a great opportunity for students.Embolden hosts a program called the Rising Leaders Fellowship (RLF). RLF is a 6-month virtual program designed to teach students how to build an effective network. Admitted via an application process, students spend 3-5 hours per month with professionals from their career field of interest to collaborate and craft a LinkedIn profile and a resume, engage in “coffee chats,” and start building their network. RLF is entirely free for participating students.Here is a link to the application, which is due on Sunday, April 28, 2024 @ 11:59 pm ET. We would love to see students from Wakefield High School for this year’s cohort!
  • EduFuturo ELP1 taking applications for Summer Leadership Group
    • Emerging Leaders Program I (ELP I) consists of a 5-week workshop with 8 sessions on college readiness and career preparation where students from 9th-11th grades develop the skills needed for the college and scholarships application process, as well as leadership skills for life (interviews, Civic Engagement, etc).

  • Virginia Tech’s Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Diversity (CEED) summer camps for rising junior and senior high school students. Please note that no previous experience is needed for any of our camps.
    • Virginia Tech’s DC Metro Area Thinkabit Lab STEM Education and Workforce Development Programs is the longest-serving collaborator in the Qualcomm Thinkabit Lab network. The mission of our Thinkabit Lab is to serve Washington, D.C. area students, teachers, administrators, parents, and collaborators in technical career exploration and the hands-on electronic and programming foundations of IOT and Smart Cities, AI and robotics automation, sensors, actuators, and data collection and analysis. In doing so, we are preparing our future STEM workforce and our increasingly diverse, technology-driven community for jobs that may not yet exist. The VT-DC STEM Labs team will work with like-minded teams, organizations and individuals interested in promoting curiosity, innovation, creativity, and students’ self-actualization and self-determination.   • NOVA Opportunities
    • NOVA’s E-Summer program (current 10th and 11th Graders) This program is sponsored by the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU) and Dominion Energy and is designed to introduce students to STEM and the energy industry and is targeted to Hispanic and underrepresented minority students. The important program details are included below, and I’ve also included the flyer below for distribution.
    • JumpStart2NOVA for summer 2024 (current 12th Graders)This program is available to seniors graduating this spring and considering NOVA in the fall. Students may select one 3 or 4 credit approved course plus SDV 100. The application for JumpStart2NOVA is now open and closes at 5pm on Friday, May 10, 2024. Courses begin on Monday, June 3 and end on Monday, August 12.
