The Wakefield High School Education Foundation

Providing Scholarships: The non-profit Wakefield High School Education Foundation was founded in 1986. To date it has given over $2.6 million in scholarships and teacher grants to a total of 475 Wakefield scholars. All the work of the Foundation is done by volunteers. The funds come from all over the world in small and large amounts. The donors are Wakefield alumni, staff and friends. Scholarships are given to students attending four-year colleges or universities, Northern Virginia Community College, Career & Technical Training and NOVA scholars who are moving on to a four-year school.

Connecting the Wakefield Community: The Foundation maintains a database of over 26,000 alumni, staff and friends of Wakefield. It sponsors events such as an annual Bash for alumni, a tent and other activities at Homecoming and an annual Alumni Night Basketball Game. It maintains a strong social media presence. The Foundation assists classes as they plan reunions. It has created and maintains a database of obituaries of alumni and staff on its website. In 2003, The Foundation created the Wakefield Hall of Fame to recognize those alumni and staff who have made significant contributions to society and who have brought acclaim or recognition to Wakefield. Inductions are made in odd numbered years.

Preserving History: The Foundation has an archive of over 7,000 items. Some of the archive is “gear” such as letter jackets, uniforms and game balls but most of the archive is paper material and it has been scanned by volunteers to create a digital archive. These items are shared on the website, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
