In order to obtain the best information on your subject, you need to find expert information on your research topic.  Experts are authorities on your subject of research and you’ll often find them in the following places.

  • Academic Institutions: Many colleges and universities are committed to research as a central part of its mission.  Local examples include George Mason UniversityThe University of VirginiaVirginia TechGeorgetown UniversityGeorge Washington University

  • Associations: a group of persons banded together for a specific purpose.  Professional Associations often act as a voice for a profession or trade.  Examples include: The American Bar Association, the National Association of Home Builders. American Medical Association, Association of Computing Machinery.

  • Foundations:  a nonprofit corporation or a charitable trust that makes grants to organizations, institutions, or individuals for charitable purposes such as science, education, culture, and religion. Examples include The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. the Walton Family Foundation, the Coca-Cola Foundation.
  • Government Organization:
    • National examples include Environmental Protection Agency, Center for Disease Control, NASA.
    • State (Virginia ): Department of Education, Department of Health, Virginia Government

  • Nongovernment Organizations (NGO’s): a nonprofit organization that operates independently of any government, typically one whose purpose is to address a social or political issue. Examples include Human Rights Watch, Greenpeace, United Nations

  • Research Institutes (Think Tanks): perform research and advocacy concerning topics such as social policy, political strategy, economics, military, technology, and culture.  Examples include The RAND CorporationCenter for American ProgressPew Research Center
