Arango Gomez, Edson

File_003

My name is Edson Arango. I’m from Colombia, South America. I’m a veterinarian and got a Master’s degree in Agricultural Marketing in my home country. We both, my wife and me, never thought about moving to another country since we were having a very stable life in Colombia. Colombia suffered a dramatic change then. There was a great economic turn down and it was not safe living in Colombia due to the drug cartels, fight among left wing guerrillas, paramilitary and military, and the very high common crime. Due to all of those reason we decided to move to America in 2000 with our only son at that time, who was 6 years old. We struggled so much at the beginning to survive and learn English, which is still developing.

It was not easy for we both my wife, who is lawyer in our country and me, to get into the fields we studied for, but doors were opened for both of us to enter the educational field. I have been teaching Spanish for more than 12 years. We have two kids now. Our son already graduated from UVa and got a Masters degree in the same field of Economics and Finance from the same university. He works in the in D.C area. Our daughter is in 8th grade at Gunston Middle school. We love traveling and spending time together as a family.
