Declamation Contest

The World Language Department at Wakefield High School held their first Declamation Contest in 2010. Since then, contests have been held every two years. During contest years, all students in Spanish, French and ASL classes memorize and study at least one poem per level. Teachers then choose the top three performers based on standardized rubrics to compete before the school audience in the auditorium with judges. Our judges in past years have included retired French and Spanish teachers from Wakefield and other APS schools, community members from Sister City committees and representatives from the education sections of the embassies of Spain, Uruguay and France. Kristyn Admire, former Miss Virginia and a linguist herself, came as a keynote speaker for the event one year.  The Declamation Contest now includes Japanese, Chinese, Arabic and German as exhibition categories.
