Dear Wakefield Families,
Welcome to the 2021-22 School Year!
The Wakefield team and I are excited to welcome our students and families back to school and to begin the year that promises to look more normal than what we have seen for the past 18 months. As we prepare for the first day of school on August 30th, we want to make sure that all our students and their families have the opportunity to visit the building and learn more about our community this summer.
Open House Sessions
We are planning a series of open-house sessions for students and families who are new to Wakefield or who were virtual last school year where families can learn about Wakefield through a short presentation and participating in a self-guided tour of the building.
These sessions are designed for our incoming 9th graders, and 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students who have not had the opportunity to attend classes in the building.
The open house sessions will take place on:·
- August 9; 4:00PM-6:00PM
- August 16; 5:00PM-7:00PM
- August 23; 4:00PM-6:00PM
- August 25; 5:00PM-7:00PM
At each session, the presentations will take place in the auditorium and will occur each hour, on the hour (4:00, 5:00, and 6:00 or 5:00, 6:00 and 7:00). The presentations will last approximately 15-20 minutes, and families are welcome to take the self-guided tour either prior to attending a presentation session or following.
Activities & Athletics
We encourage all students to find opportunities to become engaged in the Wakefield community through participation in clubs, athletics, and other activities. We will have information about clubs available at the open-house sessions, and we will have a club and activity fair during the lunch periods in September. For students who are interested in participating in Fall sports (football, golf, cross country, volleyball, and field hockey), try-outs take place starting the week of August 2. Details about the dates, times, and locations of each teams tryout and practice information will be available on the Wakefield Athletics webpage (https://wakefieldhs.rschoolteams.com/).
Prior to participating in try outs, each student-athlete must have a current physical form submitted (physical was completed after May 1, 2021). The form is available here: https://wakefield.apsva.us/warrior-activities-athletics/physical-form-new-2021-2022/
I know that students are anxious to see their schedule for the year. Unfortunately, due to delays caused by APS having to plan for both in-person instruction and the Virtual Learning Program, we do not anticipate having students’ schedules ready prior to August 19. Student schedules will be mailed home around that time, and they will be available in Parent Vue and Student Vue as well.
The Transportation Department will also be communicating with families in mid-August regarding bus assignments for the 2021-22 school year.
August 30th: 9th and 10th grade orientation at 8:19
- On the first day of school, all ninth and tenth grade students will report to Wakefield by 8:19am for orientation and welcoming activities.
- Students in grades eleven and twelve will report to school two hours later (10:15).
Eleventh and twelfth grade students who come to school by bus will catch it two hours later than the regular pick-up time, and students who come to school by car, bike, or walking should plan to arrive by 10:15AM so they can be in class by 10:19AM.
The Wakefield staff and I look forward to seeing our returning Warriors again and to meeting those who are new to our school.
If we can provide you with any additional information prior to the start of school, please contact us at 703-228-6700 between the hours of 8:00AM-4:00PM, Monday through Friday.
