A before, during, and after unit/reading strategy to assess knowledge of a topic

Purpose
To activate students’ thinking and develop knowledge about a topic before, during, and after reading or a unit of study. To assess students’ understanding of a given topic.
Procedure
- List: students are presented with key vocabulary and related terms, or they can brainstorm all the words they can think of about a particular topic (see ABC Brainstorm strategy).
- Group: students suggest logical ways to group the words.
- Label: students suggest a label for each group
Modifications and extensions:
- This strategy can be used before a unit to assess student knowledge; and used during and after a unit or selected reading for students to reflect & for the teacher to assess learning.
- Students can brainstorm individually, in a small group, or as a whole class.
- Group Lists may be posted around the room for reference. Words may be added as unit progresses, or words become part of the word wall.
