A visual vocabulary strategy to use before or after a unit/reading

Example:

Students use the diagram of a body to attach key terminology in a French classroom.

Purpose

To introduce new or difficult vocabulary or review vocabulary to assess students’ knowledge.

Procedure

  1. Identify and generate a list of key vocabulary for the unit or topic.
  2. Create or find a blank image, diagram, or map of the topic or concept to study.
  3. Introduction: Explain vocabulary as you label/identify parts of the image/ map. Have students label afterwards for assessment of understanding or with teacher.
  4. Review/Assessment: Have students label a given image as review before test or as formal assessment.

Modifications and extensions:

  1. Activity can be completed individually or in small groups.
  2. Can be used as general knowledge of a topic/concept or to deepen knowledge of a concept. (i.e. label the cardiovascular system or cross section of the heart)
